Essential Eating In The Summer Heat

It’s definitely our favourite time of year: we love the sunshine, warmer evenings, and long days spent down at the beach.

Aussie Summer is here, and with that is long days in the sun with friends and family. However, it can be easy to over-do the calories and under-do the necessary nutrients your body needs when the weather heats up.

As the seasons' change, your body’s needs change too. So before you jump out in your bikinis, here are a few tips to keep your body looking and feeling its absolute best this Summer!

Seasonal Colours
(No, we’re not talking about green and red M&Ms!)

To keep yourself feeling fresh, energetic, and looking great it’s so important to load your plate up with red and green fruit and veggies which have a great range of vitamins and minerals, plus essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins that help the body:

  • avoid tiredness
  • maintain liver health (so you can recover that little bit better if you’re having a poolside mimosa in the sun!)
  • and help with digestion, particularly helpful if you have heavy meats in your diet

Hydration Station
We all know how important it is to keep yourself hydrated to keep feeling 100% throughout the day and in your workouts, so foods with high water content are a great option when you’re feeling peckish during the hot temperatures.

Roughly 20% of our daily water intake comes from solid foods. Some real winners here include:

  • watermelon
  • cucumber
  • tomatoes and
  • spinach
They are all great foods, and are high in fibre so you stay fuller for longer to keep you from snacking at the holiday barbeques!

Vitamin C, please!
There’s a reason why frozen oranges are a hot day favourite, studies show that Vitamin C actually helps the body respond to heat, can help to treat heat rash, and helps your body take a shorter time to adjust to a new hotter environment.

Talk about a Summer Superfood - plenty of different foods can be great sources of Vitamin C, some of these include:

  • oranges
  • kale and
  • kiwi fruit

A healthy diet is important all year round, but nutrients like these are easy ways to make sure you and your family are ready for to spend the holidays out in the sun, feeling your best inside and out.
